David Mark Chalmers (1927 - 25 October 2020) was an American historian.cite-ref-gainesville-obit-1-4[1]

During the Second World War, Chalmers worked for the American army. After the war, he gained his Ph.D. in American history at the University of Rochester.cite-ref-gainesville-obit-1-5[1] In 1955, he started working as an assistant professor at the University of Florida. During his long career at the university, he was the chair of the University President's Faculty Educational Policy Group.cite-ref-gainesville-obit-1-6[1]

Chalmers was active in the civil rights movement.cite-ref-alligator-remember-2-0[2] He joined the St. Augustine movement in 1964 and was arrested for participating in the protests in St. Augustine, Florida. He was in jail for a week.cite-ref-alligator-remember-2-1[2] He was also active in demonstrations against the Vietnam War.cite-ref-alligator-remember-2-2[2]

In 1965, he published Hooded Americanism: A History of the Ku Klux Klan. It was reprinted several times and became his most popular work.
